Photo Sizes And Digital Quality

Ease of use is good. The beast makes it reasonably easy and you can shoot raw (super high quality) or just jpegs if you want. I usually shoot high quality jpegs - you can get 72 pictures from a 256 MB flash card which is inserted in the back of the D70, and these pictures are high quality 17 MB files.

Not too difficult to increase their size (up-res) to 50 MB if you know how to do it. You can use software like Photoshop to increase your images size. (Stock agencies often want high MB images for their files).

Nikon D70 review: the quality of the image.

To be honest, I feel that I'm not getting the crisp standout colors that I used to get from slide film, 35 mm camera. The color doesn't seem to look right, and I also noticed that there was huge amounts of noise (noise is apparent by the presence of color speckles where there should be none) in some of my pictures where I shot in high resolution jpeg.

But, I'm extremely passionate about my craft and the craft of photography, so perhaps more particular about the colors, tones and appearance of my images.

There is also software available that can resolve the noise - it's really more for professionals, or anyone who is concerned about their stock agency submissions being spot on.

I do notice a difference between digital shooting and non digital 35 mm shooting. But the off set of that is the ease and simplicity of digital.

And when I first got my nikon D70, one of the first thing I noticed was its ability to pull out an image in near darkness - to put it another way, the D70 only needs the barest minimum of available light to create magic with. That's the wonder of digital.

But the best, ingenious thing is that you can see your photo results immediately in the little back LCD screen. And being easy to shoot with really means because it's digital you're not paying to shoot shots, you can delete what you don't want, easily enough.

Generally, a good overall working camera or photojournalist's friend. It has an ease about it. 6.1 MP is enough for most needs. Even children can handle a camera like this (but keep that camera strap around their neck!)

What will the Nikon D70 cost you?

Well the new Nikon D70S I've seen here in Thailand for 45,800 baht (usd$1,113.40) with an AF 18-70 DX Lens and CF Hi-speed 512MB (www.fotofile.net) so no doubt you'll get a D70 for a lot cheaper than that.

For the quality of the images, and depending on your level of passion or commitment to photography, it's probably a great value purchase. What's important, is to keep the resolution on high (try shooting in high res jpeg and raw) for important, valued pictures such as family, as this stuff is history in the making and certainly important to preserve for the future.

If you're considering pursuing photography as a business (providing stock images to an agency on a regular basis, or royalty free images, etc) the D70 takes the cake for a great all-rounder, and potential money making tool.

A Simple Dude's Nikon D70 Review
And Why The Nikon D200 Is
Probably Way Better...

The Nikon D70 Review - Great Digital Photos?

The Nikon D70 has a new model now, the D70F.

I like this little beast. A beast in the nicest possibly way. Otherwise known as the Nikon digital SLR (DSLR) D70. It's a big step up from the shiny automatic digital cameras that are generally simple and easy to use.

Is the Nikon D70 easy to use?

Mostly. Of course you'll need to read the manual a few times, like any new DSLR camera. But look at me. I'm not technically inclined and prefer simplicity when it comes to my cameras, and I use the D70 proficiently - but maybe not to its fullest capabilities!

So let's get into our Nikon D70 review...

From my perspective here goes. I think the D70 pop up flash is too bright, and it's too close to the camera, leaving a shadow halo at the bottom of flash pictures. But, no big deal, as I'm not a real big camera flash user, and generally try to avoid it. And it's easy enough to use an off camera flash or external flash with the D70.
